Visit to Tornu, a traditional village in the Volta

About the Volta Region and Tornu
Ghana has 10 regions which the Volta is one of them. The Volta Region is poor and has no industry. The main source of income is simple arable forming. The fields measure a maximum of 30 acres, mainly planting cassava and corn. Due the fact that Accra is nearby a lot of young people move to the city assuming to get a better future.

In cooperation with foundation Midogo we offer you the opportunity to visit the traditional village Tornu. The village is on the border with Togo. It is a big area with around 3000 inhabitants, who live in around 20 communities. The local language is Ewe. In Tornu there is no pipe water and no electricity. The inhabitants live is houses build from loam and they live wide spread. The inhabitants live from primary arable forming. A simple school is providing basic education and the first level of secondary school. The inhabitants have no money to improve their living circumstances. They are focused on the short term “how to get food for the evening”. Because of that it is not easy to change this structure.

About foundation Midogo
Foundation Midogo is working hard to improve the local living circumstances. Midogo is developing active on five terrains. The inhabitants get education, buildings renovation or build, they have workshops, water tanks are getting opened, water holes drilled, geographical maps designed, electricity poles build, computer installed and staff attracted. Midogo will focus on the imply of their own projects from the beginning. In other parts of the Volta- region new project will be developed.

Your stay
During your stay in Tornu you will accommodate in the house of the foundation. You have access to your own bedroom, shower and toilet. Please keep in mind that your local stay is very primary and that there is no electricity and to be spare with (drinking) water.

Every evening a delightful traditional Ghanaian dinner will be served and we finish with a local drink.

Travel schedule:
Day 1:

After breakfast you depart from your hotel in Accra. You drive in roughly 6 hours to Tornu in the Volta. After arrival in Tornu you will be introduced to the Chief. You need permission from the chief before you can enter the village. During a short ceremony you will be introduced to the Chief. As a small gift you give the Chief a traditional bottle of Dutch Jenever.

Day 2:
Today you will find enough time to explore the village and the environment. Besides you will meet the daily live of Turnu. You bring a visit to the small local school, childcare, cassava factory and living areas. You will be guided by a local inhabitant.

Day 3:
After breakfast you will depart to Accra. The end of a unforgettable experience.

Your visit to the village Tornu contributes to the development and the goals of the Midogo Foundation. From the amount you pay, $50,- per person is going direct to the Foundation. Besides the local economy gets stimulated on a small basis by use of the local guides, cooks and other services from staff.

Everyday departure and possible in combination with your roundtrip or beach package.

Visiting Children’s Home “Hunukkah” in Sunyani

Use the opportunity to bring a visit to a real children’s home in Ghana !

About the region and Sunyani
Sunyani is located on a distance of 400 km north west of Accra and is the capital of the Sunyani district and the Brong- Ahafo Region. The capital Sunyani counts about 90 inhabitants. In the surrounding are almost no provisions for orphans. Also the children of the very poor inhabitants are getting less care and education.



In cooperation with the foundation Mariëtte’s Child Care we bring the opportunity to visit the Children’s Home and the local school. There are about 30 children in the Children’s Home with an age between 0 and 17 years. The help the foundation offers is focused on shelter, medical health care, education and on long term to offer a independent existence.

About the foundation Mariëtte’s Child Care
Mariëtte’s Child Care is a foundation with a target to support the work of Mariëtte and her husband Moses Asagbo in Sunyani. Mariëtte (Dutch )and her husband Moses (Ghanaian), are a young couple married in February 2006 in Obuasi. Moses is working as a pastor for the local inhabitants, specially for the children. Mariëtte is taking care of the children in the orphanage. In cooperation with The Social Well Fare Department they give support to the least endowed children of Sunyani and surrounding.




Your stay
During your stay in Sunyani you will stay in the guest house of the foundation. You have your own bedroom including your own shower and toilet.

Travel schedule

Day 1:
After breakfast departure from Accra. You will take a 7 hour ride to the Children’s Home Hunukkah in Sunyani. We make a brief stop in Obuasi for some refreshing drinks. On arrival in Sunyani you will be welcomed by Mariëtte and Moses.

Day 2:
On the first day you will bring a visit to the Children’s Home. You have enough time to explore the environment and the day to day life. You will be guided by a local inhabitant of the foundation.

Day 3:
Today you will see some more of the Children’s home and you bring a visit to the local school.

Day 4:
After breakfast you will depart to Accra. The end of an experience with value for the rest of your life.

Your visit to Mariëtte’s Child Care is supporting the development of the Children’s Home and the goals of the foundation. From the amount you have paid we donate US$ 50,- to the foundation per person.

Daily departure, and possible in combination with your booked round trip or beach holiday. On request we can extend or shorten your visit.
